MacArthur High’s Academic Decathlon Team Advances to Nationals

The Academic Decathlon team at MacArthur High School will be competing in the 32nd Annual USAD Nationals Competition April 25-27. The team advanced after wins at the state competition. Three team members (pictured, l-r) — Alexander Sandoval, Isabelle Galván, and Cody Nguyen — will travel to Minneapolis for the on-site event, which will be held at the Hilton Minneapolis Hotel. Several of their teammates — Raquel Gameros, Génesis Garfio, Celia Meza, Arturo Puente, Blanca Reyna, Yajaira Torres and David Vega — will also be competing at nationals. They will be competing from MacArthur High in an online competition.

MacArthur’s academic decathlon team had a successful year. The team took first place in district and a number of students took home individual honors in Super Quiz at the state competition. At the state competition, Génesis Garfio placed second in language and literature and third in math, while Celia Meza and Yajaira Torres tied for third in language and literature. MacArthur High’s academic decathlon team is under the direction of teachers Stacey Denum and James Fons.

USAD provides students of all learning levels the opportunity to excel academically through team competition. The Academic Decathlon® is a team competition wherein students match their intellects with students from other schools. Students are tested in 10 categories: art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, social science, and speech. The theme this year is Russia.
