Eisenhower High Student Receives Houston NW Chamber of Commerce Scholarship

The Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce named Shelbi Smith of Eisenhower High School one of two recipients of the Houston NW Chamber of Commerce Foundation Scholarship. Each student received $1,500 for the college of her choice during the Houston Northwest Chamber’s Membership Luncheon at the Sam Houston Race Park’s Jockey Club on April 11.

Smith, a senior, plans to attend Lone Star College-University Park in the summer and will later transfer to Texas State University, where she will study sports medicine. Her goal is to help injured athletes recover.

In her essay for the scholarship, Shelbi described the obstacles she had to overcome including recovering from an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury. But the debilitating knee injury did not slow down the determined young athlete who was still able to keep up with her studies as well as qualify and participate on the track team her senior year. She is also a varsity cheerleader and a member of Student Council as well as an active volunteer in March of Dimes, MS 150, Habitat for Humanity and the Houston Livestock Show.

Foundation representatives Tommy Ripley and Cindy Doyle along with Lone Star College-University Park President Shah Ardalan presented the check to Shelbi who was accompanied by her mother Regina Smith.
