Carver High Wins Tommy Tune Award

The Carver High School theater department won a Tommy Tune Award for “Best Ensemble/Chorus” for its production of The Color Purple.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, April 16 to a crowd of more than 2,500 people at the 11th annual Tommy Tune Awards, held at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.

“The talent present in the high school musical theater level impresses me more each year of the Tommy Tune Awards,” said John Breckenridge, president and CEO of Theater Under the Stars (TUTS). “The students from across our city are producing some truly amazing pieces of theater, and TUTS could not be more proud to host this awards program to give a platform for these students and their work.”

Carver cast members of The Color Purple also performed at the event. Their rendition of Push Da Button received a well-deserved standing ovation, according to TUTS public relations manager Sam Byrd.

“Congrats to Carver for their award last night, and we hope to see them next year at the Tommy Tune Awards,” Byrd said.

In addition to winning the “Best Ensemble/Chorus” award, Carver was also nominated in 11 other categories.
The students were under the direction of Roshunda Johnson.
