Nimitz’s DreVian Young, Relay Team Headed to State

Nimitz High School’s DreVian Young will be making his third straight trip to the Class 5A State Track and Field Meet as he pursues a gold medal in the 400-meter dash. Joining Young at the state meet will be the school’s 1600-meter relay team.

Both Young and the relay team finished first in their respective events at the Region III Track and Field Meet, held April 29 at Turner Stadium in Humble to earn the trip to Austin.

Young, who finished second at state in the 400-meter dash as a sophomore and junior, earned his third consecutive trip to state by clocking a 47.24 at the regional meet.

The 1600-meter relay team, which consists of Stephen Lackey, Davonte Edwards, Lonnie Strambler and Young, took top honors at regionals with a time of 3:15.14.

The state meet will be held May 10-11 in Austin at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

A number of other AISD track and field athletes also competed at the Region III Meet.

The Eisenhower Lady Eagles’ 800-meter relay team placed sixth at regionals. The team consisted of Dasia McCullum, Teytinna Roy, Daresha Petitt and Deja Harrison. Davis High’s Daphne Smith placed fifth in the 200-meter dash, while Eisenhower High’s Diamond Thomas placed fifth in the discus and shot put. Eisenhower High’s Tierra Kimble placed 10th in the high jump.

In the boy’s division, Eisenhower’s 400-meter relay team finished in sixth place at the regional meet. The team consisted of Jericho Worrell, Lavince Carter, Rodney Veazie and Treyvion Roberts. MacArthur High’s Jorge Acosta finished sixth in the 800-mete run, while Nimitz High’s Sayvon Cormier-Young finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles. Nimitz High’s 800-meter relay team finished eighth. The team consisted of Rodney Brown, Damon Young, Sayvon Cormier-Young and Deon Bogany. MacArthur High’s Jacory Hoyt placed fifth in the 400-meter dash, while Eisenhower High’s Treyvion Johnson finished third in the 200-meter dash. MacArthur High’s Juan Fraga placed ninth in the 1600-meter run, while Eisenhower High’s Seth Glass placed eighth in the shot put.
