Eisenhower High Students Attend Leadership Summit

Thirty-five juniors from Eisenhower High School and their guidance counselor Gerald H. Scott attended the African American Male Leadership Summit held May 3 at the University of Houston-Downtown. The event, made possible by a grant the University received from state representative Sylvester Turner, provided students from Eisenhower and Booker T. Washington High School with numerous workshops including goal setting, financial literacy, motivation and how to dress for success.

The professionals that led the workshops included marketing analyst Anthony Washington of Key Energy Services, Rodney Ray, founder of Games of Champions Fitness Training Company; marketing specialist Joseph Williams with National Oilwell Varco; and Willie Payton Jr., diagnostic referral center manager and chief of fee basis at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston.

Students also got to hear from a keynote speaker Xavier Beckwith who shared his story of how he grew from humble beginnings and the struggles he faced in pursuit of the goals he set for his life. Beckwith, a 23-year-old native of Houston, is currently pursuing his masters in educational policy.
