Grantham Academy Student Selected to Attend Summer Science Camp

Student Talia Chinn of Grantham Academy has been selected to attend the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp. The program is a two-week residential camp hosted at colleges and universities across the nation. In the summer of 2013, The Harris Foundation (THF), in partnership with the ExxonMobil Foundation, will sponsor up to 20 residential camps to be held during the summer months. Each camp will provide 48-54 promising middle school students the opportunity to enhance their proficiency in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education while living on a college campus — all at no cost to the child or family. Chinn’s summer camp location will be at the University of Houston-Main Campus in June.

The core STEM curriculum is integrated with field excursions and other educational experiences that enrich students’ understanding of the practical relationships between classroom work and the real world. Communication and teamwork are integral parts of the students’ camp experience. The camp also provides evening counseling sessions where students can discuss academic, career and social issues.

Through its innovative, student-centered, inquiry-based curriculum, campers will complete a minimum of 54 hours of advanced STEM study taught by highly qualified educators from area school districts and university faculty.

The selection criteria stipulates that middle school student applicants must be from a traditionally underrepresented population, have a GPA of at least a “B” overall in science an mathematics, and score in the medium to superior level on standardized mathematics and science tests. Students also have to submit a 250-word essay describing their interest in the camp and STEM.

“This is a great opportunity for Talia,” said science teacher Nancy Fragoso of Grantham Academy. “The summer science camp will further nurture her interest in STEM, which I hope will encourage Talia to pursue a scientific or technical career.”
