Aldine ISD Student Wins 3rd in National Academic Decathlon Competition

MacArthur High School student Celia Meza placed third in economics in the National Academic Decathlon Competition’s online individual event held April 25-27.

Several MacArthur High Academic Decathlon students advanced to nationals. Three team members — Alexander Sandoval, Isabelle Galván, and Cody Nguyen — traveled to Minneapolis for the on-site event at the Hilton Minneapolis Hotel.

Meza and her MacArthur High teammates Raquel Gameros, Génesis Garfio, Arturo Puente, Blanca Reyna, Yajaira Torres and David Vega also competed at nationals in the online competition.

Principal Nancy Blackwell of MacArthur High is very proud of the Meza and the Academic Decathlon team. It was the first time an Academic Decathlon team from the campus had advanced to nationals and the first time a student won at the national event.

“The team worked hard all year in district, regional, state and national competitions, both online and as a team,” expressed Blackwell. “Congratulations to Celia and all the members of the Academic Decathlon team for a strong finish to the 2013 competition year.”

USAD provides students of all learning levels the opportunity to excel academically through team competition. The Academic Decathlon® is a team competition wherein students match their intellects with students from other schools. Students are tested in 10 categories: art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, social science, and speech. The theme this year is Russia.

The MacArthur High School Academic Decathlon team members are coached by teachers Stacey Denum and James Fons.
