In Honor of Constitution Day, HBA Member Reads to Orange Grove Elementary School Students

The Houston Bar Association (HBA) helped Orange Grove Elementary School celebrate Constitution Day.

Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. The day is an opportunity for educators to teach students about one of the most important documents in American history. The Constitution gives “We the People” many rights and freedoms we enjoy today.

Each year, the Houston Bar Association celebrates Constitution Day. Volunteers visit schools to make the Constitution come alive for students. Members of the HBA volunteer their time to read to approximately 100 schools in the Houston area on Constitution Day.

Shayne Newell is a member of the HBA and an attorney with Baker Botts, LLP. She read the book “House Mouse, Senate Mouse” by Peter Barnes and Cheryl Shaw Barnes. The book helps children learn how Congress makes laws. In the book, the Squeaker of the House and the Senate Mouse-jority leader must pass a bill to establish a national cheese.

Newell read to students in four fourth grade classes. Afterwards, she donated the book to the Orange Grove Elementary School’s library for the children to enjoy.

“The Houston Bar Association selected Orange Grove Elementary School to visit,” said Debbie Collier. “The students enjoyed the book Mrs. Newell read. And they enjoyed learning more about how the Constitution affects their lives. And I thank the Houston Bar Association for donating the book to our library.”
