Hoffman Middle School, Hoffman YES Prep Pay Tribute to Veterans

Hoffman Middle School and YES Prep Hoffman joined forces to pay tribute to veterans and their service.

The Hoffman LOTC Color Guard kicked things off with the Posting of the Colors. The Hoffman Choir then led everyone in singing the national anthem. Next, students from both schools recited the Pledge of Allegiance of the United States and the salute to the Texas Flag.

The celebration took a moment to honor veterans in attendance. As the Hoffman Middle School Band played “Armed Forces on Parade,” campus leaders asked veterans to stand. Each one receive recognition.

Hoffman students also introduced military veterans in their family who attended the event. Several Hoffman Middle School staff members are also veterans. They also received recognition for their service to our country.

Afterwards, the choir and band performed “God Bless the USA” and “America the Beautiful.”

During the ceremony, Sabrina Patton read her patriotic poem. The seventh grade YES Prep Hoffman student penned the poem herself.  Caleb Crowder also demonstrated his patriotic pride. The sixth grade YES Prep Hoffman student read his essay on patriotism.

Staff members also took part in the ceremony. Hoffman math teacher and veteran Joshua Elmhorst read “Soldier.” It is a poem by Vietnam veteran George Skypeck.

Assistant Principal Comeneci Noble-Taylor with Hoffman Middle School gave closing remarks. The Hoffman Choir sang “Taps” a cappella to the tune played by Sergeant Mark Collado. SGT Collado  served in Operation Desert Storm in the U.S. Marines. He also played the ceremonial bugle for the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. It is also known as “The Commandant’s Own.” This is because of its historical connection with the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

“We were all moved by the hard work displayed by all involved in the tribute,” said Dwanna Callaway. She serves as the information literacy specialist at the campus.
