The Aldine Middle School chess team is having a great year. The team recently competed in the T.H. Rogers Scholastic Chess Tournament. The students won first place for middle school team.

That was not the only trophy the team brought home. Team members also earned 23 individual trophies.

This is the largest local area tournament of the year and the most prestigious. Approximately 500 students competed at this year’s event.

Tom Lucker is proud of the team. Lucker serves as the team’s coach.

“I am so proud of all the students,” said Lucker. “One of the highlights occurred going into the final round. We had four Aldine Middle students playing at Table Number One. This is a rare feat. It was an awesome job by all the students.”

The Aldine Middle School chess team has had done well this school year. The team has taken or tied for first place in seven of its last eight tournaments. Both Paola Hernández and Diana Ambrosio went undefeated at the T.H. Rogers Chess Tournament.

Lucker hopes the team repeats the success its had at the Texas Chess Association’s regional event in February 2015.

Aldine Ninth Grade School, Grantham Middle School and Goodman Elementary School also competed.

Lucker said this was Grantham Middle School’s first tournament. He added that this was second rated tournament for Aldine Ninth Grade School and Goodman Elementary School.
