Hill Intermediate School Students Create Necessities Bags for the Homeless

Six grade students at Hill Intermediate School did something nice. They recently took time to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Social studies teacher Jill Murphy decided to give her students a chance to take part in a community service project. They decided to donate items for the homeless and the Houston Food Bank.

During these cold winter months, the homeless need items to keep warm. So the students collected blankets, socks and other warm garments. Other items collected included toiletries, bottles of water, non-perishable snacks and canned food items.

Students then sorted the items and created an assembly line to fill more than 90 bags with necessities for people in need.

All the canned food items went to the Houston Food Bank.

But the bags went home with the students’ parents as well as faculty members at the campus. Murphy asked the Hill Intermediate School family to keep the bags in their cars. She asked that they give a bag to homeless folks they came across.

“Homeless people go unseen every day,” said Murphy. “The homeless are oftentimes ignored. When they ask for help, it often falls on deaf ears or people divert their eyes. The goal of the project was to create an awareness that homeless people are like everyone else with their own stories and troubles. It is important that we recognize homeless folks as individuals and to maybe see a little bit of ourselves in these folks.

“I want our younger generations to have a sense of compassion and empathy for all people no matter their social or economic status or the conditions they are living in. I hope this project instilled in my students a desire to help others.”
