Nimitz High School’s Maybeline Torres Places in Houston NW Medical Center/Frost Bank Art Contest

The Houston Northwest Medical Center and Frost Bank recently held their student art contest.

Each year, students from Aldine, Klein and Spring independent school districts compete. Students must submit original artwork.

Contest organizers held the award ceremony Jan. 6 at the Houston NW Medical Center. At the event, Maybeline Torres from Nimitz High School received a $125 award. She earned the award after placing second.

Organizers selected a first, second and third place winner in each category: 1) high school, 2) middle school and 3) intermediate/elementary.

The Houston NW Medical Center selected Maybeline’s artwork “Laugh” for its art exhibit. Her artwork and that of other students will be on exhibit at the medical center between Jan. 2015 to Jan. 2016. A total of 19 artworks from Aldine ISD made the cut for the exhibit.

Art teacher Leslie Rowney is proud of Maybeline.

“Maybeline is a very talented artist,” said Rowney. “The artwork demonstrates her ability to capture the essence of her theme. And it seems a bit appropriate for the contest. People say that laughter is the best medicine. It always seems to get us back in balance in life.”
