Mark Your Calendar for Tax-Free Weekend Set August 7-9

Summer is almost over. That means it is time for families to start preparing for the new school year. For many, that involves “back-to-school” shopping. But once again Texans will get a financial break. The state’s Sales Tax Holiday is set for August 7-9.

As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes. This could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

Aldine families can visit the district website for the [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]school supply lists for students in prekindergarten through sixth grade. If a supply list is not provided for the child’s grade, contact the [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]school he or she will attend during the 2015-2016 school year.

As families plan their shopping lists, they should visit the [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]Texas Comptroller’s website. Shoppers will find a [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]List of Qualifying Clothing, Footwear and Other Items as well as a [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]List of Qualifying School Supplies. The site also provides [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]answers to frequently asked questions.

Be sure to also [icons icon_name=”icon-external-link” icon_size=”14px”]read the “fine print” about eligible articles. The website explains the criteria on all sales of items that qualify for the exemption during the holiday. This includes items sold online, or by telephone or mail. Shoppers can again use lay-away plans this year.
