2 AISD Students’ Artworks Selected for YAM Capitol Show

The works will form part of the State Youth Art Month Exhibit. YAM promotes art and art education.

Shotwell Middle School eighth grade student Angie Callejas’ artwork, Reaching Out, was selected to be exhibited at the State Capitol in March for Youth Art Month.

Texas Art Education Association jurors had the difficult task of selecting artwork for the Youth Art Month Capitol Show. Once again, Aldine ISD students’ work will form part of the exhibit.

Each year, school districts across the state submit eight works for consideration to form part of the Show. This year, TAEA chose two pieces to represent AISD.

Brianna’s three-color linoleum print is of her beloved dog “Chloe.” Angie’s black and white photograph captures the lines and textures of her hardworking father’s hands.

Youth Art Month is an initiative that showcases art programs across the states and nation. The state exhibit allows the community to see the incredible art produced by Aldine ISD students and throughout Texas.

Kaileigh Newman, director of visual arts, lauded the district’s art program and expressed the importance of art education.

“We are very fortunate to have leaders that support art education,” Newman said. “Our program has outstanding art educators who work with our incredibly talented students. I am proud to say that in Aldine, we have been integrating the arts across the curriculum for years. We believe, and the studies confirm, that art impacts child development, social-emotional learning, academic achievement, and creativity. Art has the power to inspire, motivate and educate our students.“

TAEA will be publishing the students’ work to social media sites during March to celebrate our student artists.

Due to COVID-19, TAEA will not host a Youth Art Month Reception in Austin this year.
