District Celebrates National Police Week, May 9-15

AISD honors the men, women, and K-9s that protect our students, schools, and communities.

National Police Week was established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962. The observation, May 9-15, 2021, pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

The National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., contains the names of more than 21,000 officers. They were killed in the line of duty throughout U.S. history, dating back to the first known death in 1791. New names of fallen officers are added to the monument each spring in conjunction with National Police Week, May 9-15, 2021.

“Aldine ISD’s Police Department is an incredible team of men and women,” Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney said. “They not only protect and serve, but each one works every day to make positive differences in our communities.”

Chief Paul Córdova is proud of the individuals that comprise the Aldine ISD Police Department. The department operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with the help of 50 sworn personnel and nine civilian employees. It’s worth noting that 13 of the officers are Aldine ISD alumni.

Law enforcement services include patrol, criminal investigations, school resource officers, K-9 officers, communications division, and an alarm technician.

“Everyone on this team demonstrates a high level of professionalism every day,” lauded Chief Córdova. “The profession requires time and commitment. You will often hear that law enforcement is a calling and not just a job. This adage could not be truer than it is today. No police officer gets in this business for self-gain but rather to have an opportunity to make a positive difference in people’s lives. For school district police, we have an even higher calling than the average police department. We are charged with protecting our nation’s future.”

Aldine ISD Police Officers protect the staff and faculty who work hard every day to deliver high-quality educational experiences, choices, and opportunities. Chief Córdova added that officers have the authority to lead and mentor. Yet, they know that authority does not confer privilege or power. It imposes a responsibility to use the authority they have been given for the good of the organization and the people they serve.
