Conley Elementary Fifth-Graders Say Peace Out to Elementary School

Conley Elementary School held a Graduation Walk for their fifth-grade students on May 26. 

The walk was the last time that each of the students would walk through each hallway of their campus. The students lined up in the fifth-grade quad and put on their hand-made graduation caps to prepare for the ceremony. The whole campus was involved in celebrating the students. Each grade level made signs and came out of their classrooms to cheer the students on as they walked from hall to hall. 

When asked what he will miss most about elementary school, Shane Watson laughed and explained everything he will miss about his old campus.

“Wow, there is so much to miss,” Watson expressed. “I think I will miss the easy subjects in elementary school, the playground, and playing games on the Promethean board. I am looking forward to any work that will challenge me in middle school. I will use what I’ve learned in elementary school and I’m ready to learn some new things.”

Watson was not the only one excited about the graduation events. His teacher, Mia Collier, in all of her college regalia was able to walk side by side with her fifth-grade students. The first-year teacher was unable to walk at her own graduation last May because of the pandemic and COVID-19 protocols. 

“Being a first-year teacher during a pandemic was a rollercoaster ride,” Collier said. “It was difficult the first few weeks but once we were able to collaborate more with my teammates and students everything started to come together. I wasn’t able to have my family and friends watch me graduate and walk across that stage, but I was able to get that same experience with my students today. This was so much better than traditional graduation.” 

After the graduation walk, the fifth-graders had a senior picnic, received goodie bags, and had a drive-by graduation celebration.
