District Students Receive Special Awards, Honors at National History Day and State History Contests

The Aldine Independent School District proudly announces that two district students received special awards at the National Contest for the National History Day (NHD) and the Texas State History Day contests.

Ka’sean Francis from Stovall Middle School placed seventh at National History Day in the Jr. Individual Performance Category. He also won the Affiliate Award for outstanding Jr. Division presentation from Texas. His project was titled “Transformation of Songs of Hymns to Freedom.”

Emma Montiel from Carver High School for Engineering, Applied Technology and The Arts also placed second at Texas History Day and advanced to the national contest in the Individual Performance category. Her project was titled “The Unpublished Issue Of The New-York Weekly Journal.”

NHD program was held virtually from June 13-19 at the University of Maryland, College Park. The 2021 National Contest virtually hosted almost 3,000 students across the United States and territories. The students completed projects in one of five categories — documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website — and then competed in a series of contests beginning at the local level—less than one percent of projects advance to the National Contest. The NHD 2021 theme was Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.

Texas History Day, an affiliate of NHD and is a highly regarded academic program for 6th through 12th-grade students. Each year thousands of students, encouraged by teachers and parents statewide, participate in the NHD program in Texas. Each year more than 65,000 Texas students join more than 500,000 students across the country for National History Day competitions.
