District Observes National Coaches Day on Oct. 6

October 6 is National Coaches Day in Aldine and across the nation. National Coaches Day honors the men and women who inspire their student-athletes to work harder and to do their best.

Every sport and competition requires a leader. Across Aldine ISD and in every community in the United States, a coach organizes teams, plans practices and training, motivates players to strive to be the best they can be. At the same time, head coaches and assistant coaches pinpoint areas for improvement and supply guidance.

“I want to take the time to personally thank all of our coaches at every level in Aldine ISD,” said Dre Thompson, Executive Director of Athletics. “Our coaches do so much more than coaching their respective sports. They serve as mentors, advisors, and sounding boards for our student-athletes in all grade levels.”

Although a coach’s ultimate goal is winning, they do so through a wealth of knowledge. More importantly, a leader knows the game and how to drive student-athletes to work together as a team. Many coaches maintain a schedule for training, conditioning, and preparing student-athletes for competition and their best health: injuries sideline student-athletes and upset team dynamics.

Coaches work to build teams that bond well. They develop work ethics and set standards for their student-athletes that many carry with them throughout their lives.

For many student-athletes, coaches teach them to focus on reaching a goal, which sometimes is not simply about winning. Sometimes the achievement is on improving skills, playing by the rules, or learning respect for others, themselves, or the game.

Coaches represent leadership, mentorship, and inspiration. Often, a coach’s words will echo through an athlete’s mind for years to come, motivating them forward and through difficult times. Rarely do these coaches even know the impact they’ve had on an athlete until many decades have passed.
