Teague Middle School eighth-grade students recently wrapped up the Reading With A Rapper program on December 9.

The students participated in a four-week pilot program that strengthens literacy skills through rap lyrics and provides additional supports to students. Teague Middle School students had an opportunity to study and meet Houston rapper, AJ McQueen during the pilot. Additionally, the students met for discussions about confidence, mental health, and self awareness.

“Reading with a Rapper was an astronomical after-school club experience with all my friends,” Angel Rodriguez, eighth-grade student, said. “Although its ending point has reached just like a human’s life, I think it helped me realize that my favorite artists use figurative language to help them express themselves. Now, every time I read, I read with a new lens.”

During the program the students were able to write songs and poems, and share them with McQueen. The students passion and excitement encouraged them to want to continue reading and working to close the literacy gap. The campus is excited to continue this program with their sixth-, and seventh-grade students in the spring semester.
