STEMfest is an educational experience, exhibit, and competition that inspires students in STEM fields. Registering for the exhibition showcase and competition portions is April 14.

Students will have plenty of opportunities to explore, invent and create at Aldine ISD’s 2022 STEMfest on April 30. They will get to explore and see the world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) that shapes our everyday lives. Yes, art is also a big part of STEM. The creative processes behind the arts can be used to drive innovation and find inventive solutions to problems.

Staff will celebrate all things STEAM with fun-filled, hands-on activities for all ages. STEMfest targets students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The district will provide lunch and snacks for all the student participants.

Event partners and sponsors include BootUp, Microsoft TEALS, Osmo, Sam Lab, Sphero, Direct Waste Solutions, and #TechItUp, LLC. Also, actor, comedian, artist, and philanthropist Kalum Johnson will emcee the event. Local celebrity empowers youth through his Big Steppers Foundation.

“We hope to see students and their families at STEMfest,” said Dr. Joceyln McDonald, program director of technology applications and STEM. “This is another opportunity Aldine ISD is giving students of all ages to learn or be exposed to STEM and for our older students to showcase or put their knowledge and skills to the test in the competition. The goal is to engage students in STEM activities, bring out their genius, and love STEM in a fun-filled event. These events help remove any false preconceptions about STEM and encourage them to participate in STEM in school and think of the career possibilities they have in STEM fields.”

2022 Theme: Transforming Our World for a Better Tomorrow

This year’s theme centers on transforming our world with an intentional focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global call to action that provides a blueprint for developing a better and sustainable future. There are 17 interlinking goals selected to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental factors.

STEMfest Student Exhibition Showcase and Influencers & STEMfest Competition

The district’s STEMfest is more than an educational learning experience. Students can inspire others to pursue STEM by acting as influencers. They can choose to showcase from an array of STEM/STEAM projects they worked on throughout the school year, like coding, engineering, and digital media.

STEMfest participants selected to participate in the exhibition are not required to use SDGs but are highly encouraged to use them.

However, the STEMfest competition requires students to choose 1 of the 17 SDGs as a problem of practice to either provide a potential solution or bring awareness to others.

Student Participation Registration and Deadline Information

Students who wish to participate in the exhibition showcase or enter the competition must register by Thursday, April 14. Students must also submit a STEMFest Permission Slip/Formulario de consentimiento para participar en STEMfest.

Things to Know About the Competition

Students can compete in three different categories: Aldine Creates (digital media), Aldine Codes, and Aldine Engineers.

Students can register to compete as individuals or as teams. Therefore, a student would need to register as an individual competitor or select the team option if competing with team members. Please note that each school is limited to 10 students participating to represent their campus.
