TASCO Names MacArthur HS’ Fernández Coach of the Year

Under his direction, several students earned regional all-team honors; one student-athlete has been invited to play at the Senior Showcase on May 14 in San Antonio.

MacArthur High School’s boys’ soccer coach Salvador Fernández was recently named the Region 2-Class 6A Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches.

Fernández coached the Generals in an exciting season for the team. The MacArthur soccer program has grown stronger every year since Fernández has led the team. On their journey to the state championship. The team brought home second place in 6A Region 2. This year’s team took MacArthur further into the soccer playoffs than the school has ever been.

Three MacArthur athletes were also rewarded by being named to the Class 6A All-Region team.

Eleventh-grader and midfielder Josué Santos and senior forward Jay Hernández landed 2nd Team for All-Region. And Junior midfielder Alan Sánchez received honorable mention All-Region.

TASCO has selected Jay to play in the Senior Showcase on May 14 in San Antonio. The game will be Region 1 versus Region 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the Blossom Athletic Center (12002 Jones Maltsberger Rd, San Antonio, TX 78216).

“Coach Fernández emphasizes academics, discipline, and structure within his program. His student-athletes always represent MacArthur HS and Aldine ISD with class and character. Each year the MacArthur Boys Soccer Program places the most players on the 14-6A Academic All-District Team. In 2021 MacArthur had 11 players selected to the Academic All-District Team. In 2022 12 players were selected for the Academic All-District Team. The academic success of his players is important and a top priority within his program. Coach Fernández also emphasizes leadership, team spirit, and etiquette. As we left the hotel in Round Rock, the hotel manager praised the MacArthur boys’ soccer team. He shared that the team was one of the most well-behaved and polite groups that have ever stayed at their hotel,” said Director of Athletic Services Dean Colbert.
