Law Day is a national celebration and an opportunity to participate in discussions about law and its role in society. It has been sponsored and promoted by the American Bar Association and the Houston Bar Association since 1958 when President Dwight Eisenhower designated it a national holiday. The Houston Bar Association joins local and state bar associations nationwide in sponsoring activities around May 1. Although the celebration is called “Law Week,” it encompasses much more. Aldine ISD schools celebrate Law Day with various activities and Houston Bar Association visits.
This year, Law Day (May 1) focused on the theme “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change.” The Constitution is a document that serves as a blueprint for government. It delegates power, articulates rights, and offers mechanisms for change. Legislation, court rulings, amendments, lawyers, and “we the people” have built upon those original words across generations to attempt to make the “more perfect Union” a reality.Congratulations to our Aldine ISD Houston Bar Association Law Day contest winners.
The Law Week Essay contest was established in the late 1970s; the poster contest was established in 1986; the school reading program was established in 2003, as was the dialogue program, and the photography contest was established in 2012. Special needs contests began in 2011. The Special Needs Day at the Courthouse began in 2013.
