Lewis Middle School girls’ basketball coach Alicia Seay was recently named the Middle School Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC).
In her first year at Lewis Middle, Seay coached her seventh-grade girls’ team to the East Zone District Championship and a 10-1 record.
The Nimitz High School grad said she was honored to be named TABC’s Middle School Coach of the Year.
“This honor means a lot to me because I’ve invested a lot of time and hard work each year to be a great coach,” Seay said. “I’ve held strength and conditioning for young kids as well as basketball training. I’m thankful for this acknowledgment. It’s meaningful to discover your purpose in life by mentoring young female athletes.”
Seay has served as a coach for seven years, with six in Aldine ISD and one as a varsity assistant coach with Magnolia ISD.
She believes in instilling self-discipline in her players and other characteristics.
“My coaching philosophy is specifically geared towards self-discipline, teamwork, and accountability,” Seay said. “Building relationships with young girls and preparing them to compete at the next level (high school) has always been my primary focus.”
Seay said she knew that she wanted to become a coach at an early age.
“I was inspired to become a coach because of my love for the game of basketball and my desire to build lasting relationships with kids,” she said. “It’s an honor to contribute to the success of future generations. If sports can be our vehicle through life, I believe every kid should take advantage of it. Our job as coaches is to help them reach their full potential.”
After graduating from Nimitz High School in 2009, Seay earned a basketball scholarship to Colby College in Kansas City. She later earned her degree at Lamar University.
Her ultimate goal is to open an athletic complex where she can work with athletes and help improve their skill sets.
“My goal is to start my own athletic complex where I would teach athletes how to take care of their bodies in the offseason to prevent injuries and improve their strength, balance, and speed,” Seay said. “All of this would help student-athletes improve their overall skill sets as basketball players.”
