Aldine ISD Hosts Ceremony for Family and Community University Graduates

Aldine ISD’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department celebrated its inaugural Class of 2022 with a ceremony and reception. The first Family and Community University class was made up of 62 parents from across the district. The ceremony was held on May 25 at the Bamberg Professional Development and Resource Center.

FCUniversity is a program that is focused on helping parents by providing families in Aldine the necessary knowledge and resources to build confidence and empower families to support students academically, socially and emotionally.

FCUniversity offers free courses throughout the school year, varying from Well-being and Social Interaction classes to continuing education. Participants must complete a minimum of 10 classes before they are eligible to graduate.

Some of the graduates have used those new found skills to strengthen Aldine from within; a couple have gone on to become substitute teachers and paraprofessionals for the district. Along with securing positions within Aldine ISD, several went on to enroll in courses at Lone Star College to attain their GEDs, and one graduate was admitted to the alternative certification program at the University of Houston.

“FCUniversity empowers families to look ahead,” said Family and Community Engagement Specialist, Ivan Tamayo. “These examples are a perfect telling of what they are moving towards.”

The successes of the program do not stop with the graduates and their accomplishments. Along with those graduates, the program saw 350 parents take nearly 1,500 classes, with virtual classes seeing participants join from Dallas and Nacogdoches ISD. In addition, multiple parents received assistance with job applications and 52 participants registered for ESL classes at Lone Star College. All of these achievements were accomplished within the 90 sessions that were held from October 1 to May 11, and the department is looking to expand upon those successes moving forward.

“I envision having hundreds of parents graduating next year,” said Executive Director of Family and Community Engagement, Dr. Martha Escalante. “I truly believe that families and schools should work hand in hand to improve the academic and well-being support of our students.”
