A Number of Staff Assignments Announced at Sept. 20 Board Meeting

The Aldine ISD Board of Trustees met Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Board Room of the Donaldson Administration Building.

During the Sept. 20 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney announced several staff assignments.

Purvi Benitez was named Tax Attorney after serving as an Associate Attorney at Dore Rotherberg McKay, PC.
Kanika Middleton was named a Tax Attorney after serving as a Principal Attorney and Consultant at Walker Middleton.
Salvador Peralta was named Principal of Aldine Middle School after serving as an Assistant Principal at MacArthur High School.
Eva Carrillo-Iniguez was named Director of Multilingual Services after serving as a Program Director of Multilingual Compliance.
After serving as a Network Engineer, Derrick Brown was named Director of Technology Support Services.
Kalwenda Lott was named Program Director of Career and Technical Education after serving as a Career and Technical Education Teacher at Drew Academy.
After serving as an Academic Specialist at Aldine Middle School, Taryn Meier was named Program Director of Testing.
X’Zavier Bloodsaw was named an Assistant Principal at Teague Middle School after serving as a CTE Business Teacher at Nimitz High School.
Carolyn Jones was named an Assistant Principal at Aldine Middle School after serving as the Social Emotional Learning Instructional Coach with Fort Bend ISD.
Matthew D’Camp was named an Assistant Principal at Aldine Middle School after serving as a Career and Technical Education Teacher at Stovall Middle School.
Louis Evans, IV was named an Assistant Principal at MacArthur High School after serving as a Special Education Teacher at Klein Forest High School.
JoAnn Payne was named an Assistant Principal at Jones Elementary School after serving as an Assistant Principal at KIPP Connect Middle School.
Lenora Jones was named an Assistant Principal at Knippel Education Center after serving as an ELA Teacher at that same campus.
Crystal Kennedy was named an Assistant Principal at Calvert Elementary School after serving as the District Literacy Coach.
Earnest Washington was named an Assistant Principal at Aldine High School after serving as the Substitute Campus Administrator.

After serving as Principal of Eisenhower Ninth Grade School, Jane Ocanas was named Program Director of High School English Language Arts.
Suzanna Garcia was named Director of New Teacher Support after being Director of Blended Learning.
Kimberly Gollihar was named Director of PEIMS and Data Quality after serving as the District PEIMS Coordinator.

Trustees Approve Tax Rate for 2022-23 School Year

During the Sept. 20 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees approved the tax rate for the 2022-23 school year. Chief Financial Officer Stan Osborne recommended the Board set the 2022-23 tax rate at $1.2217 per $100 valuation .9192 cents for maintenance and operations and.3025 cents for interest and sinking fund). This tax rate will raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year’s tax rate. This is due to the overall increase in the HCAD (Harris County Appraisal District) Certified value. The general residential homestead exemption has been increased to $40,000 from $25,000. The average taxable value of a residence with a homestead exemption is $116,228, which is a slight increase of about .5% over last year. However, with the adoption of the lower tax rate and the increased homestead exemption, the average homeowner will see a reduction of $46 in their yearly school taxes. In addition, keeping the Interest & Sinking rate at .3025 cents will allow Aldine ISD to collect an amount higher than the 2022-23 bond Principal and Interest payments. The extra amount will be used to pay down additional debt as needed. The tax rate provides for the day-to-day operations of Aldine ISD and other lawful purposes.

Teaching, Learning, Leading Department Highlights AISD AP Scholars

Dr. Todd Davis, Chief Academic Officer, recognized the district’s 66 AP Scholars during the Teaching, Learning, and Leading Department’s presentation at the Sept. 20 Board meeting.

AP Scholar designation is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. AP Scholar with Honors is given to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams. AP Scholar with Distinction is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and 3 or higher on five or more of those exams. AP Capstone Diploma designation is granted to students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and onfour4 additional AP Exams of their choosing.

Employees Recognized

During the Sept. 20 Board meeting, several Aldine ISD employees were recognized for their leadership, connecting with fellow employees, and impacting student success.

Fred Washington, Chief Operations Officer, recognized four operations employees during the Sept. 20 Board meeting. Those employees were Jose Ramirez, Maria Bueno, Benny Col,e and Martha Calix.

AISD’s Finance Department Recognized for

Earning Certificate of Achievement From GFOA

During the Sept. 20 Board meeting, Aldine ISD’s Finance Department was recognized for having been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

The Finance Department earned this honor due to its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2021. The report was judged by an impartial panel of judges and met the program’s high standards, which included demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government entity and its management.

Grants Announced

Stacey Smith, Director of Special Programs, announced two grants during the Sept. 20 Board meeting.

Shotwell Middle School Principal Denise Winchester and teacher Sharnell Nelms secured a $2,500 grant from Houston CPAs Helping Schools to create a Shotwell Community Garden. Students will collaborate to design and build raised garden beds to grow fruits and vegetables with high school IB students.
Vardeman Primary Principal Orfelinda Todd and teachers Ana Toledo-Avellaneda and Vernique Mathis secured a $3,000 grant from Houston CPAs Helping Schools to fund a literacy lab at the school using the Core Knowledge Language Arts curriculum.

During the Sept. 20 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees approved the following action items:

Approved the Continuing Early Head Start Child Care Partnership Grant for the 2022-23 school year
Approved an MOU between the University of Houston College of Education and Aldine ISD for the Advancing Language Literacy for Relevant Investigations in Science Education project from 2022-27
Approved submitting the Staff Development Minutes Waiver Application to the Texas Education Agency
Approved an Affiliation Agreement between the University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions Eleanor Mann School of Nursing and Aldine ISD for Master Clinical Placement Training and Experience for one year

Before the start of the Sept. 20 Board meeting, students from Francis Elementary School led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance (in English and Spanish) and the Pledge to the Texas Flag. The students who led the Pledges were: Angel Diaz, Elianna Villatoro, Kereny Sanchez, Damon’ii Polk, Robert Marsh, Blanca Ferman, Daysha Gilmore, and O’Miri Tyrone. The colors were presented by the Nimitz High School JROTC Color Guard. The October Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, and will begin at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the Donaldson Administration Building.
