District Students Demonstrate Generosity With ‘Make a Difference’ Projects

Opportunities to give back to the community instill in students a lifelong commitment to helping others.

Schools across the district took part in “Make a Difference” projects. Students and staff collected and donated non-perishable goods, toiletries, socks, and raising funds for a favorite cause.

Each year, Aldine ISD students and staff show their commitment to the community by taking on projects that address their community’s needs. By participating in events like Make a Difference Day or “Make a Difference” projects, the district hopes to instill in students a lifelong commitment to helping others. “Make a Difference” projects provide an opportunity to develop empathy and respect for others. Giving back to the community helps build a positive culture in schools and the Aldine ISD community.

The Power of Teaching Kindness

• Studies show tweens increase their happiness through acts of kindness. For children, these acts nurture their well-being or sense of satisfaction and strengthen their positive connections with peers, thus gaining friends.
• Other similar studies also support that acts of kindness toward others benefit the giver. Children benefit developmentally by learning to be caring and kind. They display more positive, less bullying behaviors.
• Compassionate individuals feel good about themselves and tend to have a positive outlook on life, which creates a ripple effect in other areas. For instance, happier kids are more likely to show higher academic achievement.

A few examples of projects included Worsham Elementary School. The school, an Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE), has faculty, staff, and students donated more than 1,000 canned goods and other non-perishable food items to Harris County Precinct 2 North East Community Center’s Senior Meal Program. Vardeman Primary (EC/PreK/K) collected socks for Aldine ISD’s Homeless Office to give to those in need. And Orange Grove Elementary School partnered with Commander Adam Martínez and Quarter Master Ismael Estrada with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9187 to provide hygiene and personal care items.
