Board members volunteer their time and energy to be stewards of our public schools and ensure students graduate prepared for the future they choose. Volunteer. Student advocate. Leader. These are just a few words to describe our school board members.

“School board members represent the public interest in schools and serve as advocates for our students, staff, and local communities regarding education. They help support the district’s mission, vision, values, and goals, spending countless hours of unpaid time working to provide the best possible education for our students. They are the heart and soul of what makes a stable school district. Our school board members keep us grounded in our community to ensure we deliver on the promise of the best education possible for all our students.

“Recognizing the efforts of our volunteer school board is so important because of all the hard work trustees put into making our district a success. Please take a moment to reach out and thank our fabulous Board Members in person or on social media,” said Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney.

The theme of this year’s School Board Recognition Month is Forward, Together, which highlights the collaboration among school leaders, teachers, and parents on behalf of students.

Board service is a volunteer effort accepted by only a few in the community. It is a tough job with no salary. It is a critically important job that requires an election and then mandated training. It is a responsibility that takes time, a mature outlook, and careful decision-making.

School board members are the state’s largest elected officials, numbering more than 7,000 statewide. They are farmers, doctors, business owners, retirees, and professionals. You see them in the store, at the game, and in your neighborhood. They are often overlooked, but their contributions cannot be overstated. They are shaping tomorrow.

Please take a moment to recognize our Aldine ISD Board Trustees — Rose Avalos, Randy Bates Jr., Dr. Kimberley Booker, Conception ‘Connie’ Esparza, Dr. Viola M. García, Steve Mead, and Paul Shanklin — and honor their work to help our students move forward into the future together. Thank them for their work on behalf of our students and community.
