Testing helps AISD gauge students’ strengths and areas for improvement.

STAAR testing is right around the corner. This spring, TEA is launching newly redesigned assessments. Testing for eligible students will occur from April 18 through May 12.

State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) testing for students in 4th-, 5th-, 7th- and 8th-grade and at the high school level will take tests across the state.

STAAR’s Purpose

The Texas Education Agency implemented the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) in the spring of 2012 to fulfill requirements enacted by the Texas Legislature.

STAAR helps ensure that Texas students compete with other students nationally and internationally. One crucial function of STAAR is gauging how well schools and teachers prepare their students academically.

The test is specially designed to measure individual student progress concerning content directly tied to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Every STAAR question is aligned to the TEKS currently in effect for the assessed grade/subject or course.

Tips to Prepare Students for STAAR Testing

Families can help their students prepare for performing well on state exams by:

• Making sure students get a good night’s rest (click here for details)
• Offering a healthy and nutritious breakfast — all students get to eat FREE for breakfast and lunch
• Making sure they dressed comfortably, complying with the Aldine ISD dress code
• Encouraging them to think positively about the test and their abilities
• Reminding them to review their work for mistakes; a STAAR test is not a race. Students must go at their own pace and take breaks.
• Giving them something to look forward to by planning something special — a movie, favorite dinner, etc. — to celebrate when testing is finished.

We want our students to do their best. Encourage your student to feel comfortable and confident. Additionally, a positive attitude goes a long way.
