Aldine ISD’s Proposed Bond to Bring Aldine Police Department Standalone Building

On Tuesday, November 7, voters will decide whether Aldine ISD’s proposed bond referendum will pass. The proposed bond is broken up into three separate propositions that address aging buildings, safety and security, technology, buses, student and teacher devices, and a new performing arts center.

Aldine ISD values parent and community involvement, and that commitment is demonstrated in our approach to developing a comprehensive plan for the district. A 58-member Long-Range Planning Committee met multiple times to study and prioritize potential bond projects. The Committee consisted of parents, community members, district staff, senior citizens, and business/community leaders. This group presented a recommendation to the Aldine ISD Board of Trustees. And after careful review and deliberation, the Trustees voted to approve a bond proposal in the amount of $1.8 billion. This bond is largely their recommendation.

Proposition A focuses on aging facilities, safety and security, district-wide technology, and new buses.

Safety and security was a top priority for the LRPC when planning the bond. Prop A includes a dedicated district police department, updated security technology systems, safety film, site fencing, lighting, and emergency generators.

Aldine ISD’s Police Department works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Like the district – the department has also experienced significant growth, with limited space in its current building

Prop A would move the department from its current building to a different one at the center of the district.

The issue of space is also a factor for House Bill 3, which requires that a dedicated officer must be at all campuses across the district. This means the department would go from about 80 to 140 officers.

“For House Bill 3, we would need to hire 60 officers and three supervisors,” said Police Chief Paul Cordova. “We will be doubling the size of our department.”

Currently, the department is split up across many buildings. This causes inefficiency and hinders the training of new officers. It also lacks a room large enough to hold all the officers in one space, which makes meetings and training sessions difficult to organize.
