January is School Board Recognition Month. Aldine ISD is celebrating its trustees’ dedication and commitment to the district and its students.

This year’s School Board Recognition Month theme is “Locally Elected, Community Connected,” highlighting the connection between school trustees and their communities. School board members are the state’s largest group of locally elected officials.

“Our school board members are selfless volunteers who spend long hours working to ensure all our students have the opportunity to learn and grow. Together, we are steadfast in building community ownership of our collective future at AISD. Truly, I am grateful to each Trustee for their tireless devotion to our students, teachers, staff, and community,” Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney said. “Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one way to say thanks for all they do.”

Schools will determine their campus-specific celebrations and honors; however, schools and the public will be able to recognize and thank Board members at the January school board meeting held in the Boardroom on Tuesday, January 23, at the Donaldson Administrative Building. All school board meetings start at 7 p.m.

Dan Troxell, executive director of the Texas Association of School Boards, applauded the efforts of volunteer trustees in providing leadership and good governance so that school districts can focus on educating the 5.4 million public schoolchildren in their care.

“Texas school boards are so important because they bring a deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of their local communities to their role,” Troxell said. “Boards lead their districts by providing oversight, setting goals, overseeing the budget, and selecting and evaluating the superintendent. These volunteers serve for the betterment of their communities.”

The Aldine ISD Board of Trustees consistently supports student programs, staff training, and community engagement and recently called for a $1.8 billion school bond, which voters approved in the November election.

Please take a moment to recognize our Aldine ISD School Board Trustees — Dr. Kimberley Booker, Paul Shanklin, Conception ‘Connie’ Esparza, Rose Avalos, Dr. Viola M. García, Steve Mead, and Randy Bates Jr. — and honor their work to help your students sail into the future. Thank them for their work on behalf of our students and community.
