Students Showcase Theatrical Skills at Zone and District 14-6A Events: Carver, Davis Advance to Bi-District One-Act Play Contest

The Bi-District Contest starts at Davis High School on Thursday, March 21, starting at 2 p.m.

Aldine ISD high schools competed in two UIL One-Act Play competitions — the Zone Event and the District 14-6A OAP Contest — earlier this month. The Carver Theatre Department, with Robert Nemiroff’s adaptation of To Be Young, Gifted and Black: A Portrait of Lorraine Hansberry in Her Own Words, advanced from Zone A; the alternate from AISD in Zone A is Aldine High School. Nimitz High School also advanced from Zone A to the District 14-6A Contest. The Davis Theatre Department, with its reimagined production of the Greek tragedy The Women of Troy by David Grote, advanced from Zone B to the Bi-District contest; the alternate from AISD in Zone B is Eisenhower High School. The Bi-District Event is on Thursday, March 21, at Davis High School. The contest starts at 2 p.m.

Hansberry is known for writing her 1957 play A Raisin in the Sun. The play made Hansberry the first black author of a show. After she died in 1965, Hansberry’s ex-husband Robert Nemiroff collated her unpublished writings. The play was adapted using Hansberry’s letters, interviews, and journal entries. It was then converted into an equally successful autobiography with the same title.

The Carver High School directors are Roshunda Jones-Koumba, Jabari Collins, and Kai Womack.

The Women of Troy centers on the powerless but still defiant women of the defeated city of Troy — now the spoils of war — waiting for the Greeks to decide their fate. Initially written by Euripides as a blazing protest against how Athens treated women’s rights in such circumstances, this play, despite its ancient origins, concerns human dignity. The Davis Theatre directors created a reimagined production about the traditional Greek story. The Davis production is set in the historical West African Kingdom of Dahomey. From the acting, lighting, sound, projections, costumes and makeup, and dialect, contest judges praised the production, stating, “There hasn’t been a production like this before. It is both awesome and refreshing.”
