Winners of Black History Month Oratory Contest Recognized at March 19 Board Meeting

During the March 19 Board of Trustees meeting, Aldine ISD’s FACE (Family and Community Engagement) Department recognized the winners of the district’s Black History Oratory Contest.

FACE Director LaTashia Abrams announced the winners from the competition that was held during Black History Month.

In the ninth grade and high school category, Ashari Nelms of Hall Success Academy finished in first place, while Brenda Brooks of Victory Early College High School finished second and Sade Jackson of Nimitz Ninth Grade School finished third.

In the middle school category, Kennedi Ceasar of Young Women’s Leadership Academy finished in first place, while Annie Washington of Grantham Academy finished in second place and Valentina DeLeon of Garcia Middle School finished in third place.

In the elementary school category, Madison Pete of Houston Academy finished in first place, while Daniel Asoro of Anderson Academy finished in second place and Madison Proshee of Stehlik Elementary School finished in third place.

Aldine ISD’s Purchasing Department Earns Prestigious “Award of Merit”

During the March 19 Board Meeting, Chief Financial Officer Stan Osborne announced that the district’s Purchasing Department was awarded the “Award of Merit for Purchasing Operations” by the Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO). The Award of Merit was established in 2009 to recognize Texas school districts, open-enrollment charter schools and education service centers that are committed to following professional standards in the acquisition of goods and services. The Purchasing Department consists of Abigale García, Executive Director of Business Services, Frances Tucker, Purchasing Supervisor, Victoria Lee, Lead Buyer, Bianca Ellis, Lead Buyer, Gloria Harris, Buyer, Selena Prado, Buyer, and Jennifer García, Buyer. Accepting the award at the TASBO conference on Feb. 21 in Houston were Osborne, Alexia Rogers, Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance, Perla Dávila, Executive Director of Grants, Garcia, and Firmino Mariano, Executive Director of Accounting and Finance.

Houston Sports Authority, Chevron make $53,300 donation to Aldine ISD

During the March 19 Board meeting, the Houston Sports Authority and Chevron made a $53,300 donation to Aldine ISD as part of the Houston Loves Teachers (HLT) campaign. The funds will be used to purchase classroom supplies for selected teachers, help cover expenses for Field Day at a number of AISD campuses and provide two aspiring principals funds for professional development this summer. Representing the Houston Sports Authority at the March 19 Board meeting was Chris Massey and Chevron was represented by Laura Dandridge.

FACE Department Recognizes Two Community Partners

During the March 19 Board meeting, FACE Executive Director Gina Foroi recognized two community partners. Foroi recognized the Buckner Family Hope Center, which provides families with resources and support to protect children, strengthen families and transform generations. The Buckner Family Hope Center has supported Aldine families by providing back to school supplies and assisted families who have been displaced by fires. Buckner Family Hope Center Director Whitney Nico represented the organization at the March 10 Board meeting.

Foroi also recognized Serving the Community. The organization provided Aldine families with new shoes to start the 2023-24 school year, it also provided holiday food baskets and provides weekly meals for Aldine families. During the fall semester, FACE shared its need for a guest reader with an ASL interpreter to participate in FACE’s monthly FACE Virtual Story. Alyssa Snider and Becky Ketcher volunteered. Representing Serving the Community at the March 19 Board meeting were Pastor Shawn Everhart, Robert Armstrong, Snider and Ketcher.

Staff Assignments Announced At March 19 Board Meeting

During the March 19 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney announced three staff assignments.

• Erik Torres was named Director of Transformation Learning Programs after serving as ADSY & Strategic Scheduling Manager with the TEA.
• Torivio Treviño was named Director of Human Resources – Staffing after serving as Substitute and Classified Staffing Manager with Aldine ISD.
• Nereida Ochoa was named Director of Human Resources – Staffing after serving as Principal of Thompson Elementary School.

Trustees Approve Action Items

During the March 19 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees approved the following action items:

• Approved a ratification Memorandum of Understanding with Achievement Network (ANET) and Region 16.
• Approved a Board Resolution for the HOPE (Helping Others Pursue Excellence) Truancy Prevention Program at all comprehensive high schools to reduce truancy for the 2024-25 school year.
• Approved a Memorandum of Understanding Affiliation Agreement between Aldine ISD and the City of Houston to renew the Project Saving Smiles (PSS) Program from 2024 to 2028.
• Approved a Memorandum of Understanding between the Health Coalition of Greater Houston dba HOPE Clinic and Aldine ISD for the 2023-24 school year.
• Approved an amendment to agreement between Memorial Hermann Community Benefit Corporation and Aldine ISD for clinical services at participating campuses through Sept. 1, 2024.
• Approved an interlocal agreement with Lone Star College and Victory Early College High School for the next three-year renewal period.
• Approved the Dual Credit Partnership with Lone Star College and Aldine ISD for the next three-year renewal period.
• Approved to submit a low attendance waiver to the TEA (Texas Education Agency) for Aldine ISD.
• Approved single contracts and purchases of $100,000 and greater.
• Approved the monthly Tax Office refunds.

Prior to the start of the March 19 meeting, the Davis High School JROTC Color Guard presented the colors and students from Goodman Elementary School led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge to the Texas Flag. The April Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the Donaldson Administration Building.
