Carver, Davis Theater Troupes Shine at Bi-District One-Act Play Event to Advance to Area Competition

The Area One-Act Play Competition will occur on Saturday, April 13, at Magnolia High School.

Carver High School and Davis High School competed in the Bi-District and advanced to the Area One-Act Play Competition. Carver advanced with its production of To Be Young, Gifted & Black, A Portrait of Lorraine Hansberry in Her Own Words, adapted by Robert Nemiroff; Davis advanced with its production of The Women of Troy. Carver and Davis high school campuses were the only district schools to advance to the Area event, which will take place on Saturday, April 13, at Magnolia High School.

Hansberry is known for writing her 1957 play A Raisin in the Sun. The play made Hansberry the first black author of a show. After she died in 1965, Hansberry’s ex-husband Robert Nemiroff collated her unpublished writings. The play was adapted using Hansberry’s letters, interviews, and journal entries. It was then converted into an equally successful autobiography with the same title.

The Women of Troy centers on the powerless but still defiant women of the defeated city of Troy — now the spoils of war — waiting for the Greeks to decide their fate. Initially written by Euripides as a blazing protest against how Athens treated women’s rights in such circumstances, this play, despite its ancient origins, concerns human dignity. The Davis theater directors created a reimagined production about the traditional Greek story. The Davis directors set the production in the historical West African Kingdom of Dahomey.
