Best-selling Author Angie Thomas Meets With Hoffman Middle School Students

Angie Thomas, the author of The Hate U Give, visited with select students at Hoffman Middle School on April 4 to promote her latest book, Nic Blake and the Remarkables, her middle-grade level debut title.

English Language Arts teachers selected 150 students to meet Thomas in a talk show-style presentation titled “Angie Thomas Live in Hornet Nation.” Principal Jeana Adams and William Schaller, campus librarian, interviewed Angie about world-building, character development, and the writing process.

After the presentation, students asked Thomas questions, ranging from advice to get over writer’s block to the famous question: Is macaroni and cheese a side dish or main course?

Hornet VIP Readers then met in the library for a meet-and-greet and photo opportunity. They got their books personalized, asked one-on-one questions, and posed for a picture with Thomas.

Schaller shared that all students in attendance received a signed copy of Nic Blake and the Remarkables to read and a stocking of the Little Free Library Outside for other Hornet Nation readers. He added that Thomas provided over 200 copies of her book, which was released in paperback on April 2.

Schaller thanked the six student Library Ambassadors who assisted with setting up the event, the signing line, decorating, and cleanup. He also thanked Marco Zannier Virginillo, program director of AISD Library Services, for attending the event.
