Carver High School One-Act Play Theater Troupe Advances to State

The cast and crew of the Carver High School’s One-Act Play, “To Be Young, Gifted & Black, A Portrait of Lorraine Hansberry in Her Own Words,” pictured here, will advance to the State UIL competition on May 18.

The Carver High School Theatre Department’s One-Act Play cast and crew were one of two theater teams picked from Region 2-6A to advance to the UIL State Competition next month.

The Regional One-Act Play (OAP) Contest occurred at University High School in Waco, TX, on April 27.

The Carver students performed To Be Young, Gifted & Black, A Portrait of Lorraine Hansberry in Her Own Words, adapted by Robert Nemiroff. They competed against five other schools. Also participating in the contest were Westfield, Detroit ’67; North Forney, Amadeus; Bridgeland-Spring, Awakening; Waxahachie, Frankenstein; and Midway, Comedy of Tenors.

Westfield High School will also advance to the State Contest.

To Be Young, Gifted & Black, A Portrait of Lorraine Hansberry in Her Own Words

Lorraine Hansberry is known for writing her 1957 play A Raisin in the Sun. The play made Hansberry the first black author of a show. After she died in 1965, Hansberry’s ex-husband Robert Nemiroff collated her unpublished writings. The play was adapted using Hansberry’s letters, interviews, and journal entries. It was then converted into an equally successful autobiography titled To Be Young, Gifted and Black: A Portrait of Lorraine Hansberry in Her Own Words.
