The 2024 National Middle School (K-8) Championships will take place in Atlanta, GA, May 10-12, 2024. Impact Leadership Academy is the only team from Aldine ISD to compete in the national competition against over 1,200 of the nation’s top players from over 35 states.

Amidst the lively atmosphere of Impact Leadership Academy, a unique initiative took root in the fall of 2022. The academy’s chess program emerged as a hidden gem, led by the passionate Toby McCraw. Unbeknownst to many, this program was about to embark on a journey that would take it from local tournaments, where they honed their skills, to global recognition, setting it apart from other chess programs.

Principal Jonathan Kegler is steering the chess program with a vision for a unique educational experience. His unwavering belief in the educational power of chess found a strong ally in McCraw. As the news spread, the chess team became a hub of strategic thinkers, drawing students from various grades. The team’s competitive spirit was ignited, with a small group of seven students carving their path to success.

The academy’s chess squad made an impressive debut, clinching the middle school district championship and earning a spot at the state competition in their inaugural year. The stakes were high, the competitors seasoned, but Impact Leadership’s team showcased their mettle, finishing fourth among Texas’s middle schools — a remarkable achievement for first-timers.

Despite their qualification for the national championships, logistical challenges barred their participation that year. Yet, this setback only fueled their determination. Under the guidance of McCraw, along with Brione Stephenson and Dominique Wiley, the team refined their skills through a unique regimen of posture, physical activity, and meditation. This innovative approach sharpened their chess tactics and prepared them to face life’s broader challenges with poise and resilience, a testament to their unwavering spirit. This resilience is a source of inspiration and motivation for students and chess enthusiasts alike.

This school year was nothing short of spectacular. Impact Leadership Academy hosted its tournament, emerged victorious at the Mandarin Chess Tournament, and shattered records at the Klein Chess Tournament. Their groundbreaking performance of 111.5 wins dominated the local chess scene and earned them an invitation to play in Italy, a testament to their growing influence and prowess.

The chess team, now 70 players strong, is a mix of eager young minds from different grades, all united by a common goal: excellence. The young chess players have become symbols of youthful ambition and tenacity.

Based on their performance at the state event, 15 Impact Leadership Academy students are headed to the 2024 National Middle School (K-8) Championships, set to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, May 10-12. Impact Leadership Academy is the only team from Aldine ISD to compete in the national competition against over 1,200 of the nation’s top players from over 35 states.
