Performing arts students, student-athletes recognized at May 21 Board of Trustees meeting

The May 21 Board of Trustees meeting spotlighted the many accomplishments made by Aldine ISD Performing Arts students and student-athletes during the 2023-24 school year.

Performing Arts Students Recognized

During the May 21 Board meeting, Chief Transformation Officer Dr. Adrian Bustillos presented the Teaching, Learning and Leading program, which highlighted the district’s Performing Arts programs. Dr. Bustillos introduced Refugio Rodriguez, Director of Performing Arts, who announced a number of accomplishments Performing Arts students and groups achieved during the 2023-24 school year. Rodriguez announced that the Carver High School Theater Group advanced to State in One Act Play, where they finished fifth overall. Ivan Davidson was named Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. The troupe is under the direction of Directors Roshunda Jones, recipient of the NFHS Outstanding Theatre Educator Award, and Jabari Collins. The Kujawa Elementary School Choir was selected as a  perform Texas Music Educators Association Performance Choir. Aldine ISD’s Mariachi Program earned a first division in the Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation competition and advanced to State for the first time of the program where it received an Excellent rating.

In addition, a number of Performing Arts students from each traditional high school in Aldine ISD were introduced at the May 21 Board meeting.

Aldine High School

Student-Athletes Recognized

During the May 21 Board meeting, Executive Director of Athletics Dre Thompson recognized a number of Aldine ISD student-athletes and their coaches for the accomplishments they attained as individuals and as teams during the 2023-24 school year.

Aldine High School

• Aldine High School power lifter Brianna Ponce was recognized for becoming the first power lifter in the history of Aldine ISD to earn a state championship title. Brianna won the 165-pound unequipped division at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s State Tournament. She lifted 280 pounds in the squat, 140 pounds in the bench press and 355 pounds in the dead lift for a total of 775 pounds. Joining Brianna at the board meeting was her coach, Todd Polvado.
• Baseball – district champions, Johnny Toups, Coach of the Year. Present at the Board meeting were players Julio Gonzalez and Johnny Toups Jr.
• Girls Golf – regional qualifiers. Coach – George Rhoden. Golfers present at Board meeting were Aileen Guzman (THSCA Academic All-State), Melanie Oohmanzor (THSCA Academic State), Victoria Ochoa and Elizabeth Cueva.
• Boys Tennis – regional qualifier. Coach, Floyd Mayne. Golfer Brandon Trann was present at the Board meeting.
• Boys/Girls Swim Team – regional qualifiers. Coach Richard Bolduc was present at the Board meeting.

MacArthur High School

• Boys/Girls cross country – District 14-6A champions (boys and girls), regional qualifiers. Coach – Patrick James. Runners Alejandra Espinoza and Xavier Sandoval were present at Board meeting.
• Spring Tennis – regional qualifiers. Coach – Matthew Giesel (Coach of the Year). Swimmers Sergio Compean, Ethan Nava, Jennifer Gamez and Ashley Ramirez were present at Board meeting.
• Volleyball – District 14-6A champions. Coach – Lynda Eastland. Players Maricela Hernandez, Kayla Jones, Jessika Martinez and Estefania Negrete were present at Board meeting.
• Boys Soccer – District 14-6A champions. Coach – Salvador Fernandez (Coach of the Year). Players David Arrizola, Santiago Arrizola, Victor Juarez and Alden Segundo were present at Board meeting.
• Girls Soccer – District 14-6A champions. Coach – Leisy Olivares. Players Estrella Arrizola, Emily Arrizola, Maddison Duran and Marylin Lopez were present at Board meeting.
• Girls Track – regional qualifier. Coach – Patrick James. Runners Kayla Jones and Chloe Orea were present at Board meeting.
• Boys Track – regional qualifiers. Coach – Christopher Dykes. Runner Tavion Atkison was present at Board meeting.
• Boys/Girls swimming – regional qualifiers. Coach – Patrick Herr. Swimmers Giselle Rodriguez, Samantha Gonzalez, Issac Contreras and Abel Hernandez were present at Board meeting.

Eisenhower High School

• Girls Track – regional qualifiers. Coach – Krystal Washington. Runners Janya Gregory, Alison Bryant and Patience Washington were present at Board meeting.
• Boys/Girls swimming – regional qualifiers. Coach – Alexis Cisneros (Coach of the Year). Swimmers Biany Gomez, Tesly Ruiz Orellano, Korey Whitely and Edwin Pineda were present at Board meeting.
• Spring Tennis – regional qualifiers. Coach – Jeffrey Brush. Players Nelson Estrada Castro, Sara Mendoza and Jocelin Reyes were present at Board meeting.

• Boys Basketball – regional qualifiers. Interim coach – Jacobe Kemp. Players Jeremiah Demouchette, Jaden Bergeron and Bruce Thurston were present at Board meeting.
• Girls Track – regional qualifiers. Coach – Jaryd Gray. Runners Amaya Armstrong, Kerr’Yelle Carter, Jayla Cooper and Andrea Thomas were present at Board meeting.

Davis High School

• Boys/Girls Swimming – regional qualifiers. Coach – Orellana Camillo (Coach of the Year). Swimmers Hannia Varo, Vianey Varo, Diego Mendez and Branton Perez were present at Board meeting.
• Girls Golf – District 14-6A champions, regional qualifiers. Coach – Kavin Green (Coach of the Year). Golfers Briana Flores, Danielle Brooks, Vianay Varo and Kyra Brown were present at Board meeting.
• Boys Track – regional qualifiers. Coach – Nicholas Powell. Runners John Gray and Isiah Gundy were present at Board meeting.
• Girls Track – regional qualifiers. Coach Tramisha McGrew. Runners Diamond Bossier, Mariah Lewis, Denealah Lewis and Ariel Atkins present at Board meeting.
• Boys/Girls Water Polo – reginal qualifiers. Coach – Orellana Camillo. Players Summer Strawhun, Isabel Acevedo and Courtney Martinez were present at Board meeting.

United Sports

• Nimitz High School basketball team – second in regionals. Coach – Julie Grutzmacher. Players Xavier Martinez, Sean Territo, Jeremiah Fleming, Princeton Kaough, Sam McGee, Ashton Brooks, Jordan Smith, Greg Motley, Brayden Woods, Kaden Phillips, Walter Moore and Grace Roberson.
• Nimitz track – sixth at regionals. Coach Julie Grutzmacher. The team consisted of Melvin Walters, Tyjai Jackson, Sam McGee, Greg Motley, Dontay Hampton, Javier Torres, Andrew Razo, Bre’Azia Jones, Jamorian Jones, Sean Torrito and Mya Brass.
• MacArthur High School track team – The team consisted of Riley Teran, Jose Chavez, Keenan Warren-Kelly, Miguel Galvan, Zechariah Jones, Nicole Robelldo and Renetta Robelldo.

FACE Recognizes Community, District Partners

During the May 21 Board meeting, Giana Foroi, Executive Director of FACE (Family and Community Engagement) recognized a number of Aldine ISD employees and community members who assisted FACE and its members during the 2023-24 school year.

Trustees Approve Action Items

During the May 21 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees approved the following action items:

• Approved minutes of previous meetings
• Approved the Camps and Programs for Minors Agreement between Texas A&M University and Aldine ISD from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025
• Approved to submit low attendance to TEA for Aldine ISD
• Approved single contracts and purchases of $100,000 and greater
• Approved monthly Tax Office Refunds
• Approved probationary contract renewals for 2024-25
• Approved term contract renewals for 2024-25
• Approved 2024-25 one-year extensions for current two-year term contracts

Prior to the start of the May 21 Board meeting, students from Reece Academy led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and Pledge to the Texas Flag. The Aldine ISD Police Department Honor Guard presented the colors. The June Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the Donaldson Administration Building.
