Performing arts students, student-athletes recognized at May 21 Board of Trustees meeting
The May 21 Board of Trustees meeting spotlighted the many accomplishments made by Aldine ISD Performing Arts students and student-athletes during the 2023-24 school year.
Performing Arts Students Recognized
During the May 21 Board meeting, Chief Transformation Officer Dr. Adrian Bustillos presented the Teaching, Learning and Leading program, which highlighted the district’s Performing Arts programs. Dr. Bustillos introduced Refugio Rodriguez, Director of Performing Arts, who announced a number of accomplishments Performing Arts students and groups achieved during the 2023-24 school year. Rodriguez announced that the Carver High School Theater Group advanced to State in One Act Play, where they finished fifth overall. Ivan Davidson was named Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. The troupe is under the direction of Directors Roshunda Jones, recipient of the NFHS Outstanding Theatre Educator Award, and Jabari Collins. The Kujawa Elementary School Choir was selected as a perform Texas Music Educators Association Performance Choir. Aldine ISD’s Mariachi Program earned a first division in the Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation competition and advanced to State for the first time of the program where it received an Excellent rating.
In addition, a number of Performing Arts students from each traditional high school in Aldine ISD were introduced at the May 21 Board meeting.

Student-Athletes Recognized
During the May 21 Board meeting, Executive Director of Athletics Dre Thompson recognized a number of Aldine ISD student-athletes and their coaches for the accomplishments they attained as individuals and as teams during the 2023-24 school year.
Aldine High School
- Aldine High School power lifter Brianna Ponce was recognized for becoming the first power lifter in the history of Aldine ISD to earn a state championship title. Brianna won the 165-pound unequipped division at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s State Tournament. She lifted 280 pounds in the squat, 140 pounds in the bench press and 355 pounds in the dead lift for a total of 775 pounds. Joining Brianna at the board meeting was her coach, Todd Polvado.
- Baseball – district champions, Johnny Toups, Coach of the Year. Present at the Board meeting were players Julio Gonzalez and Johnny Toups Jr.
- Girls Golf – regional qualifiers. Coach – George Rhoden. Golfers present at Board meeting were Aileen Guzman (THSCA Academic All-State), Melanie Oohmanzor (THSCA Academic State), Victoria Ochoa and Elizabeth Cueva.
- Boys Tennis – regional qualifier. Coach, Floyd Mayne. Golfer Brandon Trann was present at the Board meeting.
- Boys/Girls Swim Team – regional qualifiers. Coach Richard Bolduc was present at the Board meeting.

- Nimitz track – sixth at regionals. Coach Julie Grutzmacher. The team consisted of Melvin Walters, Tyjai Jackson, Sam McGee, Greg Motley, Dontay Hampton, Javier Torres, Andrew Razo, Bre’Azia Jones, Jamorian Jones, Sean Torrito and Mya Brass.
- MacArthur High School track team – The team consisted of Riley Teran, Jose Chavez, Keenan Warren-Kelly, Miguel Galvan, Zechariah Jones, Nicole Robelldo and Renetta Robelldo.
FACE Recognizes Community, District Partners

Prior to the start of the May 21 Board meeting, students from Reece Academy led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and Pledge to the Texas Flag. The Aldine ISD Police Department Honor Guard presented the colors. The June Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the Donaldson Administration Building.
