The Aldine Independent School District Convocation was held Friday, August 2, to welcome teachers and staff to the new school year.

Various district leaders, including Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney, welcomed staff. The event was a proud moment to share a few of this year’s highlights, such as the new W.W. Thorne Stadium, initial projects to launch from the historic $1.8 billion bond approved by voters in 2023, CCMR (college, career, and military readiness) options, and gains in STAAR.

Dr. Goffney also launched the district’s new five-year strategic plan, Accelerate, which we believe will pave the way for even greater success in the future (See English video; watch the video with Spanish translation). Goffney also shared the ’24-’25 hashtag for the year, #AldineImpact.

This year’s keynote speaker at the annual celebration was astronaut José M. Hernández. His inspirational story can be seen in the movie A Million Miles Away or in the several books Hernández has written. Hernández’s story is one of resilience and achievement, depicting his journey from working the fields of the San Joaquin Valley in California to becoming an engineer and fulfilling his life-long dream of being a NASA astronaut. It is a tale of community and sacrifice to accomplish a seemingly impossible dream.
