Teaching, Learning and Leading Highlights Principals, Parent Leadership Academy, and SHINE

Dr. Villarreal shared with the audience that October is National Principals Month. The district celebrated its principals on Oct. 3 at the ILT meeting, and the district’s school assistant superintendents continue to celebrate them during their level meetings. “Principals are the backbone of our schools, providing leadership, guidance, and support to students, teachers, and staff alike,” Dr. Villarreal said. “They are responsible for creating a positive and nurturing learning environment that empowers students to reach their full potential.”
Also, during the Teaching, Learning and Leading Division portion of the Board meeting, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Faviola Cantú recognized the Parent Leadership Academy. It was created to empower families of emergent bilingual students with a pragmatic curriculum and instructional delivery. The program is under the leadership of Altagracia ‘Grace’ Delgado, executive director of multilingual services; Eva Carrillo-Iniguez, director of multilingual special programs; and Elizabeth Godoy, Title III family, literacy and outreach liaison. Cantú shared with the audience that during the September Mexican American School Boards Association (MASBA) conference, MASBA recognized the Board’s role in the development and continuous work of the Parent Leadership Academy with the Outstanding Civics Initiative Award. Cantú also highlighted the district’s SHINE (Supporting, Honoring, Inspiring, Novice Educators) program. SHINE is under the direction of Dr. Lindsey Wise, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning; Christi VanWassenhove, executive director of professional learning and leadership development; Suzanna ‘Suzy’ García, director of new teacher support; and Dr. Gwendolyn Lockett, program director of professional learning. SHINE was developed to build capacity and create a community practice for Aldine’s 0-1 year associate and international teachers. García and Lockett were charged with designing, developing, and launching SHINE and revamping the mentorship program. In the program’s second year, AISD introduced five new teacher support coaches. The district continues to work with expanding support for second-year teachers with the potential to add a program that supports teachers from their first to third years.
