Aldine ISD Board of Trustees Honored at January Board Meeting

January is School Board Recognition Month in Texas. Aldine ISD Board of Trustees were recognized for their leadership, service, and commitment to the district and community during the Jan. 14 board meeting. The Aldine ISD Board of Trustees consists of President Dr. Kimberley Booker, Vice President Connie Esparza, Secretary Steve Mead, Assistant Secretary Rose Avalos, and members Dr. Viola M.García, Randy Bates, and Paul Shanklin. Several elected representatives provided resolutions or proclamations to the board during the meeting. Pct. 2 County Commissioner Adrian García’s representative, Carmen Aguilar, was present at the Jan. 14 meeting to provide a resolution. Other elected officials who provided resolutions or proclamations were State Senator Carol Alvarado, State Reps Senfronia Thompson, Armando Walle, and Pct. 1 County Commissioner Rodney Ellis. Aside from the token of appreciation received from the elected officials, board members and the audience were able to watch a video featuring principals, teachers, and students, thanking trustees for their hard work and dedication to the district Bryant Stevens, the district’s multimedia communications specialist, produced the video. Board members were also given gifts, thank you signs, and cards from various Aldine schools.

Aldine Impact Award Winners

During the Jan. 14 board meeting, an Aldine ISD Trustee recognized three winners with the Aldine Impact Award. The Award is given to employees and community members who go above and beyond the call of duty in their respective roles with Aldine ISD. Dr. Booker nominated Deon Samuel, energy manager at the Dr. Wanda Bamberg Professional Development and Resource Center, Sydney Major, associate teacher at Ogden Elementary, and Erica Campa, executive assistant to the superintendent.

Teaching, Leading And Learning Department Announce Aldine ISD Livestock Show, Inaugural Spanish Spelling Bee Winners

Chief Academic Officer Dr. Faviola Cantú announced the 66th annual Aldine ISD FFA Livestock Show and Auction. The event will be held from Jan. 29-31 at the M.O. Campbell Education Center. Aldine ISD has five FFA chapters within the district, with students from Aldine, Eisenhower, MacArthur, Nimitz, and Davis High School. Leading up to the event, FFA students have shown dedication and hard work in caring for their animals. The livestock show consists of animal exhibits, an art showcase, an animal science fair, and more. FFA students attended the board meeting to help promote the event. The students included Miguel Torres and Montzzerat Galván of Aldine High School, Sharon Aldana Flores and Valeria Hernández of Davis High School, Bra’Shon Oliphant and Ethan Harris of Eisenhower High School, Victoria Fuentes and Alfredo Molina of MacArthur High School, and Jackson Dodd and Kaylee Hidalgo of Nimitz High School. Students also presented the board members with the 3rd annual Livestock Show t-shirt design from winner Alina Montoya from Caraway Elementary.

Also, during the board meeting’s teaching, leading, and learning segment, Dr. Cantú recognized the top district winners from the Inaugural Spanish Spelling Bee held on December 11, 2025. Around 40 emergent bilingual students in grades 4-8 participated in the event, enduring five rounds of intense competition. Yarizta Valladares of García Middle School won first place representing grade band 6-8, second place, Helen Padilla of Oleson Elementary School will present grade band 4-5, and third place, Dilan Galván of Escamilla Elementary School will also represent grade band 4-5. The top three winners will advance to the Region 4 Spanish Spelling Bee on February 5, 2025, at the McKinney Conference Center in Houston.

Aldine ISD Employees Recognized

Aldine ISD Chief of Police Paul Córdova named Police Detective Deborah Campos the Police Department’s Employee of the Month.

Board Approve Action Items

During the Jan. 14 board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees approved the following action items:

• Approved the minutes from the previous board meetings
• Approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Achievement Network (ANET) and Region 16
• Approved the Aldine ISD Early Head Start Non-Competitive Baseline Grant Application for Budget year 3/1/2025 through 2/28/2026
• Approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Harris County Public Health (HCHP) for the Community Health and Wellness Division (CH&W) – Substance Use Prevention Services through August 31, 2025
• Approved the 2025-2026 Traditional Academic Calendar and the 2025-2026 Additional Days School Year (ADSY) Academic Calendar
• Approved single contract and purchases of $100,000 and Greater
• Approved the mid-year budget amendment 2024-2025
• Approved the Aldine ISD 2025 Public Information Act 12-month calendar
• Approved the monthly Tax Office Refunds

Dr. Booker Announces Committee Appointments

Board President Dr. Kimberly Booker announced new members of the Board Standing Committees for 2025. The nominations committee will consist of Chair Randy Bates and members Connie Esparza and Paul Shanklin. The Board Policy Committee will consist of Chair Dr. Viola M. García and members Rose Avalos and Randy Bates. The Board Member Committee will consist of Chair Connie Esparza and members Steve Mead and Paul Shanklin. The School Names Committee will consist of Chair Steve Mead and members Dr. Kimberly Booker and Dr. Viola M. García. The Advocacy Committee will consist of Chair Rose Avalos and members Dr. Kimberly Booker and Connie Esparza.

Before starting the Jan. 14 board meeting, DeSantiago EC/PreK/K School students led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge to the Texas Flag. Davis High School Choir graced the audience with two songs. The February Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in the boardroom at the Donaldson Administration Building.
