Aldine High Student Honored at National Art Awards Ceremony in New York

Aldine High School junior Alisson Garcia Molina recently traveled to New York City to be honored at the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards ceremony, marking a significant milestone in her artistic journey.

Alisson’s exceptional talent shone through as she was one of just 2,800 young artists and writers from across the country selected for national recognition by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. This competition, one of the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious, is a true showcase of creative excellence for teens.

“This recognition is a testament to Alisson’s talent and dedication,” said Kaileigh Newman, Aldine ISD director of visual arts. “We are incredibly proud to see one of our own celebrated on a national stage.”

In April, Alisson earned a National Gold Medal in the Photography category for her piece Salvatore. Her work was chosen from nearly 310,000 submissions nationwide.

Salvatore, a carefully framed mirror self-portrait, captures what Alisson describes as “the intimacy of getting ready when you’re at your most vulnerable and genuine.” The image was the result of a thoughtful process: setting up a camera in front of a mirror, meticulously adjusting angles to keep equipment out of view, and taking multiple test shots until the framing felt just right.

“When I found out I won, it was surreal,” Alisson said. “My mom and I opened the website together and practically jumped out of our seats.”

This is the first time the 11th grader has entered the Scholastic competition. Alisson says the recognition has validated her as an artist and solidified her future goals.

“I hope to become an art professor or teacher,” Alisson said. “All of my art teachers have taught me something valuable, and I want to pass on that love of self-expression.”

Alisson’s achievement reflects Aldine ISD’s commitment to fostering creativity and providing students with opportunities to express their voices through the arts.

The national awards ceremony was held June 6 at Carnegie Hall.
