Aldine ISD Shines on Stage at The Ensemble Theatre’s Production of ‘Akeelah and the Bee’

Four Aldine ISD representatives recently took their talents to the professional stage in Akeelah and the Bee at The Ensemble Theatre in Houston. Carver High School students Johnny Kelley, a sophomore, and Sannia Bell, a senior; Drew Academy choir director April Wheat; and Lewis Middle School theatre director Johnny Barton all performed supporting roles in the hit production, which ran for 27 performances this fall.

The inspiring play, based on the beloved film, was written by Cheryl L. West and directed by Eileen J. Morris, artistic director of The Ensemble Theatre. It tells the story of a young girl’s journey to the National Spelling Bee, highlighting the power of perseverance, community, and self-belief.

The Aldine ISD performers were part of a talented cast that captivated audiences throughout the five-week run, earning enthusiastic praise from students, educators, and theatergoers alike.

Several Aldine ISD schools organized field trips to see the production, giving students the opportunity to experience live, professional theater while cheering for familiar faces on stage. Schools in attendance included Drew Academy, Jones Middle School, Lewis Middle School, Young Women’s Leadership Academy, and Carver High School.

“It was a privilege to share this story with young people who could see themselves in Akeelah’s journey. Having our students watch their own teachers and peers on a professional stage was a powerful reminder that the arts are for everyone,” said Barton. “The play’s message also left a lasting impression on students.”
