Aldine ISD Alumna Latonia Moore Returns Home for Her Houston Grand Opera Debut

From singing gospel in her church and in school to earning three Grammy Awards and acclaim on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, Aldine ISD alumna and MacArthur High School graduate Latonia Moore continues to hit all the right notes in her remarkable career.

Now, Moore’s journey has come full circle. The internationally celebrated soprano, who has graced some of the world’s most prestigious stages, is back in her hometown of Houston for her long-awaited Houston Grand Opera (HGO) debut as Serena in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, running through November 15, 2025. This return is not just a performance, but a homecoming and a moment of pride for the entire community.

For Moore, the moment is deeply personal. In a 2022 feature about the Aldine ISD alumna, she shared her dream of one day performing at the Houston Grand Opera. On this very stage, she first fell in love with opera after attending a production of Porgy and Bess nearly three decades ago.

“This is where it all began,” Moore reflected in a recent interview. “To perform Porgy and Bess here, in Houston, feels like a homecoming — a celebration of everything and everyone who shaped me.”

After graduating from MacArthur High School, where she was a performing arts student, Moore studied music at the University of North Texas before captivating audiences across the globe with her powerful voice and emotional depth. Her performances with the Metropolitan Opera, Dallas Opera, and major international companies have earned her critical acclaim and multiple Grammy Awards.

As she takes the stage in her hometown, Moore not only fulfills a personal lifelong dream but also serves as an inspiration to Aldine ISD students who dare to dream big. Her journey from a local student to the global stage is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance.

“Opera may have started for me in a Houston church and an Aldine classroom,” Moore once said, “but music — and passion — can take you anywhere.”
