MacArthur High School Dominates 2025 Aldine ISD Academic Decathlon, Sweeps Top 10 Individual Scores

MacArthur High School claimed the 2025 Aldine ISD Academic Decathlon championship, continuing its dominance in the districtwide competition held Nov. 8, which featured the 2025-26 theme The Roaring Twenties.

The theme guided students through interdisciplinary challenges in art, economics, literature, music, mathematics, science, and social sciences. The Great Gatsby served as the long-form literature selection, anchoring an exploration of the cultural and economic landscape of the 1920s.

MacArthur earned the top overall team score in the Large School Division with 25,199.5 points. Victory Early College High School placed second (18,161 points), followed by Avalos P-TECH School (17,035.2 points).

The Generals’ exceptional performance was evident across all categories, as MacArthur students secured the top 10 highest individual scores among the 111 competitors districtwide — a rare sweep that highlights the team’s depth and preparation.

Senior Logan Haagenson Jiménez led the field with an overall score of 5,279.6 points, earning first place in the Honors category. He was followed by teammates Nicolás Díaz (Varsity), Jacqueline Alfaro (Honors), Andrés Juárez (Scholastic), and Nayenci Rodríguez (Scholastic). Rounding out the top 10 were José Sosa, Joselyn Rodríguez, Yareli Escobedo, Samuel Moreno, and Harold Ramírez — all from MacArthur.

“This team has worked tirelessly since the summer, and their dedication shows in every event,” said Head Coach Park Van. “We are incredibly proud of how they represented MacArthur.”

Assistant Coach Stephanie Debettignies said the team’s success reflects its unity and purpose.

“Our students push each other in the best ways,” she said. “They support one another, stay focused, and genuinely enjoy learning. That spirit makes achievements like this possible.”

MacArthur students also earned the top score in nearly every event across the Honors, Scholastic, and Varsity categories, including art, economics, literature, mathematics, music, science, and social sciences.

Haagenson Jiménez led the district in multiple events, earning first-place finishes in art (720), economics (740), literature (820), mathematics (457.1), music (520), science (720), and social science (640) in the Honors division. Several teammates — including Alfaro, Rodríguez, Sosa, and Anabel Orozco — secured second- and third-place finishes throughout the competition.

In the Scholastic and Varsity categories, MacArthur’s strength was equally evident. Juárez, Rodríguez, Kati Castillo, Díaz, Escobedo, Adán Mendoza, Ramírez, Dayana Hernández Chávez, Michael Gray, and Moreno each earned top-three scores in their respective events.

Dr. Susan Pelezo, executive director of Advanced Academics, praised students and coaches across the district for their commitment.

“The Academic Decathlon is one of Aldine ISD’s most rigorous academic competitions,” Pelezo said. “Our coaches and students commit to months of reading, research, and practice. We are proud of all nine participating high schools and congratulate MacArthur on another exceptional performance.”
