A pair of Aldine ISD student-athletes are headed to Austin after earning runner-up finishes at the Region II Track and Field Championships in Waco, securing spots in the UIL State Track and Field Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin.
Porsha Daniels of Aldine High School placed second in the girls’ shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 10 inches under the guidance of coach Mildred Smith.
Albert (A.J.) Brown of Nimitz High School also earned a second-place regional finish in the boys’ discus with a throw of 163 feet under coach Jarryd Gray.
For Brown, a prominent dual-sport athlete who has excelled in both football and track and field, qualifying for state means more than a personal achievement. The Nimitz star quarterback and Texas College commit emphasized that representing his school and community on the state stage is a responsibility he takes seriously.
“It feels good knowing I got to represent my school at the state level,” Brown said. “Not everybody gets that opportunity, so it’s something I take pride in. I think it shows that Aldine athletes work hard, compete hard and can go against anybody when we stay locked in.”
Brown reflected on a season filled with pressure and adversity, saying the team’s success came from remaining focused and trusting one another through difficult moments.
For Daniels, the road to Austin has been defined by perseverance and determination. After tearing her ACL in August, Daniels missed volleyball and basketball seasons and nearly lost the opportunity to compete during track and field season.
The recovery process challenged Daniels physically and mentally, but she remained committed to her comeback.
“I left it all in God’s hands,” Daniels said. “I continued to pray and worked hard for what most people may say is an impossible comeback. But I had so much love and support to keep me on track. I thank everyone for being here for me.”
Daniels credited her coaches for supporting her throughout rehabilitation and helping her return to competition. She said their encouragement and commitment motivated her to become a better athlete and person.
In her first season as head track and field coach at Aldine High School, Smith believes Daniels embodied the program’s message that hard work pays off.
“Even though she sustained a career-ending injury for most high school athletes, she persevered,” Smith said. “Every day, she showed up to practice and worked hard. Every day, she spoke words of encouragement to her teammates. She attended every track meet to coach her teammates in the shot put and discus. It was like having another coach on staff. As a coach, I cannot say enough about this young lady.”
Both athletes will compete at the UIL State Track and Field Meet on Saturday, May 16. Brown is set to compete in the discus event at 3 p.m., while Daniels will compete in the shot put at 9 a.m. This marks the second consecutive season that Aldine ISD athletes have represented the district at the state track and field championships in Austin.
