Aldine ISD educator Linda Nigro has been recognized as the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s (TAHPERD) K-12 Health Teacher of the Year, one of the organization’s highest honors for educators across the state.

Nigro received the award during the TAHPERD convention and awards banquet in December 2025 in Fort Worth. The association, which has recognized excellence in education for more than 100 years, honored 15 educators statewide across multiple categories during the ceremony.

Nigro, a Health and Physical Education teacher at Vardeman EC/PK/K, said the recognition reflects years of support from campus and district leadership throughout her career.

“Aldine has allowed me to grow with great principals and leaders, committees who have had an impact on my successes,” Nigro said. “I have had outstanding leadership to work with and phenomenal leaders to serve at the campus level as well as the state level while serving my profession.”

Nigro also credited Aldine ISD Physical Education Director Kenneth Hernandez for encouraging her professional growth.

“I am especially proud to have Kenneth Hernandez’s support and leadership,” Nigro said. “Kenneth believes in me, and I strive to keep aiming high in Aldine and TAHPERD.”

Known by students and colleagues as “Coach Nigro,” she has built a reputation for creating an engaging and energetic learning environment focused on physical health, nutrition, motor skills and cognitive development. She said helping students experience success in the classroom remains the most rewarding part of her career.

“I love to see their expressions when they taste success for the first time in class,” Nigro said. “It is my job to set the foundation.”

Colleagues, friends and family members, including her husband, joined Nigro in celebrating the honor during the awards banquet.

The TAHPERD K-12 Health Teacher of the Year award now joins a growing list of accolades earned throughout Nigro’s career in education and service to Aldine ISD and the state of Texas.
