Aldine ISD welcomed educators and staff back for the 2026-27 school year Monday, Aug. 10, with a journey around the world that brought them back to one familiar place: Aldine.
The district’s annual Convocation set the tone for the year ahead with performances, celebrations, giveaways and a message centered on the district’s new hashtag, #ChooseAldine.

The event featured a special theater production, “There’s No Place Like Aldine,” that took staff on a journey across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas and the United States. Aldine students brought the production to life through acting, dance, ballet folklorico, choir, mariachi, orchestra and band performances, while other students painted throughout the show. Dorothy’s journey ultimately led her back home to Aldine, reinforcing the message that no matter where the journey takes us, there’s no place like Aldine.
The journey also reflected on where Aldine ISD has been and where the district is headed. Superintendent Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney challenged staff to build on the choice they have already made to serve Aldine by making four additional choices throughout the school year: choose to connect, choose to inspire, choose to impact and choose to believe.

“Every person in this room made a choice. You chose Aldine,” Goffney told staff. “And I want to say thank you.”
The choice is already making a difference for Aldine Students. From 2023 to 2026, students achieved double-digit gains in English II and reading at grades 4, 5, 6 and 8, as well as in mathematics at grades 4 and 8 and Algebra I. Student growth also outpaced the state at every grade level in reading and mathematics during that period.
Aldine students also made significant gains in college, career and military readiness. More than 92% of students are now graduating college, career and military ready (CCMR), compared with 45% in 2021.

“That is not just growth. That is impact,” Goffney said.
Convocation also featured keynote speaker Alex Sheen, founder of because I said I would, a social movement and nonprofit focused on the power of promises and keeping commitments. Sheen shared his personal story and challenged staff to apply the message of commitment to their everyday lives.
As Aldine ISD begins another school year, the message of Convocation was clear: the choices employees make each day can shape the experiences and futures of Aldine students.
Aldine ISD extends a special thank-you to the community partners and sponsors who helped make Convocation possible. The event was fully funded through sponsorship support, led by presenting sponsor Turner & Townsend Heery, along with diamond sponsors Aldine Votes, Bartlett Cocke General Contractors, Imagine Learning, PBK, VLK, Duratec, Builders of Integrity and Flintco; gold sponsors MWA Architects, Good Reason Houston, Camdon Graphics, Kirksey Architects, Print Services, Quiddity Engineering, Terracon, Arcadis, Gamday Pretzels, Drymalla, Teal Construction Company, Crown Trophy, Stantec, Smith & Company Architects, Centegix and the University of Houston; and T-shirt sponsors Aldine AFT, Buchner, InvestTex Credit Union and Thompson Enterprise.
