Aldine ISD’s FACE Department Wraps Up Informational Tour in Time for FCUniversity’s Start

On September 14, 2022, Aldine’s Family and Community Engagement Department held a free informational session at Houston Academy, where they had graduates from last year’s Family and Community University speak to parents about how the program has helped and changed their lives since completing the program. The informational session was a part of a tour that was held throughout the month of September, with the last session ending on September 21.

Several recent FCUniversity graduates spoke of their experience with the program, and how they have benefitted from the classes even after their graduation.

“They have a variety of classes, and I was able to choose ones I thought would help me and my family,” said Crystal Peña, a recent FCUniversity graduate. “Along with other categories, they offered classes that helped me build tools and a better understanding of ways to assist my child who’s on the autistic spectrum.”

Other parents spoke of the communication skills they learned that allowed them to foster more effective conversations with their children, or the language courses they took to help bridge the language barrier between home and school life. Others touched on the fact that they had children of varying ages, from grade school to grown adults, and the classes they took were able to assist with how they interacted with all of them.

The FCUniversity is designed with four core ideas in mind, academic life, well-being and social interactions, continuing education and community. With these pillars in mind, parents are able to enroll in the various classes they believe will benefit them the most. Along with that freedom, the classes are offered in various ways, in-person, virtual and pre-recorded. This is to provide the parents with the most flexibility to go along with their schedule. 

Following its inaugural year, which saw a graduating class of 62 parents, the university will be starting up again on October 1, and it is currently open for parents to enroll in its various classes. For more information, click here.
