AISD Cafeterias Offer Healthy Choices During 2012-2013 School Year
Disponible en:
This fall, Aldine Independent School District cafeterias will meet new federal nutrition standards for school meals. The new standards ensure that meals are healthy and well balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school breakfast and lunch!
School meals offer students milk, fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains as well as meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. Starting in the 2012-2013 school year, school lunch will meet the following additional standards that require:
• Age-appropriate calorie limits
• Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)
• A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
• Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
• More whole grains, and;
• Less sodium
“Fortunately, meals served by Aldine Child Nutrition Services already meet existing nutrition standards as well as many of the new requirements,” said Dana Sheffield, executive director of Aldine ISD’s Child Nutrition Services Department. “We’re always working to offer students in Aldine ISD healthier and tastier choices. Initiatives such as breakfast at no cost, multiple menu choices, fresh made salads, fresh fruits and vegetables served daily, and made-to-order sub sandwiches are currently in place. We look forward to welcoming your children to the cafeteria this fall.”
