CTE Program Collaborates With Certiport® to Help Students Attain Industry Certification

Aldine ISD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) curriculum is evolving as skills needed in the workforce become more complex. With a stronger focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers, the CTE curriculum is becoming more specialized and aligned with industry standards.

Aside from enrolling in industry-approved courses, students will have more opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials such as Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS), ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) Automotive Service Technician (AST), Autodesk® Certification, ServeSafe, and National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core Certification. Aside from the preparation and career readiness they receive in the CTE program, students who obtain these certifications are more marketable right out of high school.

During the 2012-2013 school year, Aldine ISD’s CTE Department will collaborate with Certiport® to offer industry standard testing at each high school. Certiport® is a leading provider of value-added test delivery services for the global workforce and academic markets. The high schools will be set up as testing sites, which will permit students to test in the comfort and convenience of their own campus.

“We believe that more students will be encouraged to take certification testing this school year,” said Franklin Higgins, AISD director of career and technical education. “Having the testing available at the high school campuses will make it more convenient for students to obtain certification, which will in turn make them more marketable in today’s workforce.”

The Aldine Independent School District offers career and technical education courses in a number of cluster areas: agriculture, food and natural resources; architecture and construction; arts, audio video technology and communications; business management and administration; education; finance; health science; hospitality and tourism; human resources; information technology; law, public safety, corrections, and security; marketing; STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics); transportation, distribution, and logistics; and career development. Admission to these programs is based on ability, aptitude, interest, grade level and class size.
